As the amount of storage in phones increases and the range of office applications improves, handsets like the Nokia 9300 and 9500 are being used for many more purposes, including handling confidential or privileged information. PowerSecure is designed to help you ensure that such information on your Communicator is password protected, meaning that every time the cover is opened (or at timed intervals), the phone is locked until the correct password has been entered.
PowerSecure features some well designed countermeasures beyond simply requesting a password. For example, the program resists being ‘killed’ by process managers – a failing in some other security programs. Additionally, if PowerSecure detects a breach in your phone’s security, it will automatically restart the handset ensuring that whatever happens, a user must enter the correct password to access the data and functions on the phone.
While PowerSecure does help you to protect your data, there are a couple of ways in which it could be improved. Encryption is normally a key feature of such security programs but PowerSecure doesn’t encrypt your data. This means that should a persistent user manage to find a way around the password interface, your data would be completely unprotected. SymbianWare do, however, offer other applications which will help you to encrypt documents. Another aspect with room for improvement is the user interface which uses custom controls you’ll need to get used to.
That said, PowerSecure is still the best all round security solution for the Nokia Communicator series, and is a robust choice for anyone who’s looking to protect their data and phone from prying eyes.
